Why Use A Reward Credit Card?

When we first got married, we had a credit card from our bank. It was OK for us. We had good customer service but felt like there really wasn’t any incentive for us to use it. We decided to get a reward credit card through an outdoor recreation store, Cabela’s. This seemed to be perfect for us. It was a Visa and who doesn’t take Visa? Not to mention, we loved the idea of the reward program. The reward program is simple: we earn points towards free products (from Cabela’s) every time we use our card. No matter where we shop or use our card, our points keep piling up. Other credit cards use similar rewards systems.

Still unsure? Let me explain. We earn 2% back on our total purchase every time we shop at Cabela’s. We also get 1% back on our other purchases (any place Visa is accepted). This has worked out well for us. My husband is still in school, so we put his tuition on our reward credit card and pay it off as quickly as we can. He also commutes an hour to work everyday, so our gas purchases have really contributed to our point total. These points can then be used towards free products. Last year, we paid for almost all of our Christmas presents using the points that we had accumulated throughout the year. Another benefit is that we can redeem our points at any time. We can use five points just as easily as 500 points.

Why use a reward credit card? Think about it…you are basically getting paid to shop. Regardless of how you pay, you are going to need to buy gas and groceries, just to name a few. Why not pay for these necessities with a reward card and get free products or cash back? It just makes sense to use the incentives that these credit card companies are offering.

So, we have loved our Cabela’s card for almost 2 years now. But, there is only so much you can buy at Cabela’s using your points. Why limit the possibilities of your points? We have decided that the cash back credit card would benefit us more right now. With these cards, you still get a percentage of your purchases back. However, instead of earning points, the credit card company actually gives you cash back.

It seems as though the price of everything we buy has increased. It would be better for us to buy gas, groceries, tuition, etc. and actually get a paycheck for it. Look into which card would be best for you.
